My name is Morgan, I am 29 and I work in Brisbane as a Business Development Manager.

In terms of managing the risks of cervical cancer I did everything right. I was immunised at 15 under the National Immunisation Program and continued to have my two yearly Pap tests, yet was diagnosed in early 2014 with a rare form of cervical cancer at the age of 27.

Prior to diagnosis I had a few subtle warning signs including irregular bleeding, back pain and anxiety while driving. Being proactive, I spoke to my GP and brought my regular Pap test forward. I was quickly diagnosed with cervical cancer.

I have since undergone surgery including a full hysterectomy and six weeks of chemotherapy and radiation.

I am back at work and enjoying life being a year cancer free. Early on my mum contacted ACCF for support and they have been amazing throughout my journey. Since being back at work I have put my event management skills to good use organising a charity football match to raise money and awareness for ACCF as well as volunteering on their fundraising committee.

My tips for Australian women about cervical health:

My advice to all women is to look after yourselves, have open conversations with a GP or gynaecologist that you trust and get regular check-ups because it can save your life. If my small story has raised just that little bit of awareness about cervical cancer then my job is done.

Cancer isn’t an old persons disease and we aren’t invincible as so many young people think that we are. For all the women out there I hope I have been able to inspire you just a little bit to get that Pap test or listen to your body if you don’t feel right. Everyone deals with cancer differently whether its from the shock, the emotion or from the treatment and it changes your outlook on life. I think I have been able to cope so well so far because of all the amazing family and friends I have around me and I can’t thank them enough for the support and positivity that you surround me with.
